The SafeHouse Program consists of several aspects built around needs of the community in relation to a place of safety and well being — what we often refer to as Serenity.
Safe Space, Safe House
Our facilities are part of the safe2pee network, and are LGBT safe houses for individuals of any age who are subject to bullying. We are also open to persons needing to simply go to a place where they don’t feel as if they are being judged or picked on by others and where they can feel free to be themselves.
As a part of the Safe2Pee commitment, gender variant individuals who are in need of a place to use the restroom are welcome to use our facilities. Â They will not be turned away.
Emergency Need Shelter
We can provide one to three night accommodations on an Emergency basis for LGBT victims of domestic violence or rape, LGBT persons needing emergency shelter following an eviction, or for LGBT refugees entering the US on the basis of danger to themselves in other countries.
For those interested in entering the Emergency Shelter program, please download the applicable packet on our Resources page, fill it out, and then contact the organization at Staff@thisishow.org and let us know your situation.
These are not the best (it might be a couch), but the space is safe and people are welcoming at the residence.
These are emergency, critical need services.  We can help through referrals with other agencies in the Valley in moving forward from this very short term point.
Advocacy Services & Moral Support
TIH also offers advocacy services. Â These are essentially services where a member of our staff or one of our volunteers who has been trained to do so will accompany a member of the Trans community to various locations and assist in interacting with agents and organizations to help ensure that treatment is respectful and to monitor the situation as well as act as “moral support” if that’s all that’s needed.
It is not easy to always do things alone, and we will be there.
We will help fill out police reports, medical reports, various forms, and more.
